Minhaj Et Talibin

Imam Shafei (140 A.H. - 204 A.H.) founded the Shafei school of law, on two principal treatises, the Risalah, which was Islamic Jurisprudence dealing with the law, and the epic Kitab al-Umm, a veritable source book of law. These two treatises show how Imam Shafei drew forth his teachings from the Quran and Hadiths for transmission to his students. The main source of the Shafei legal doctrine as is applied in our Courts within the framework of our legal system is the English paraphase of the Shariah, the MINHAJ ET TALIBIN of Al-Nawawi (676 A.H.) which was first translated into French by Vanderberg and published in Batavia in 1883. This English translation of the MINHAJ ET TALIBIN stands out as the only Shafei Treatise to the Non-Arabic speaking, English Oriented, English Educated and English Speaking muslim Ummah in the entire south east Asian Habitat of the Shafei family of muslims. That there are other treatises and works by scholars of equal or greater importance is never denied.
